Good afternoon, My ASHP Summer Meeting Agenda by Charles Westergard BSPharm, MBA June is fully upon us and that brings us to another ASHP Summer Meeting, this year being held in Rosemont outside of Chicago. Answer this week's poll: Has your meeting/travel budget been cut this year? If your passion is like ours, for pharmacy quality improvement and how technology can assist, this will be a great meeting! Where am I going to be spending my time? Here is my agenda for the meeting: 10 a.m. Sunday: The Joint Commission Hospital Update 2009 - I always take in Darryl Rich's JCAHO Updates for a preview of the upcoming accreditation standards and where The Joint Commission is putting their emphasis. 8 a.m. Monday: Branding and Influence for Critical Change in Challenging Times - Building a credible and positive "brand" for your department in administrative eyes is critical when you need to lobby for resources to better serve patients. 2 p.m. Monday: IV Safety: Preventing Death and Harm from IV Medication Errors - Representatives from ASHP, ISMP and IHI will dissect the issue of IV medication safety as IV medications still present one of the most error-prone areas of our practice. This session will blend both learning and practical application. 8 a.m. Tuesday: Shrink Your ADE Hospital Admissions - Representatives from Novant will outline how they were able to achieve a 29% reduction in all-cause hospital admissions and reduced their adverse drug event admissions to less than 5% of all hospital admissions. 2 p.m. Tuesday: The Economic Stimulus Package: A Catalyst for Healthcare Reform - I'm particularly interested in hearing Kevin Marvin's take on the HITECH provisions related to health IT spending. 8 a.m. Wednesday: Don't Bug Me! Ramping Up an Antimicrobial Stewardship Program - The experts will face off in a debate-like forum on which approach to stewardship is better (pre-authorization or prospective audit and feedback) and whether the primary objectives of a stewardship program should be cost savings or reductions in resistance rates. This should be a lively session. If you're not up to compliance with USP 797, you may want to check out Meeting Today's Challenges in Implementing USP <797> instead. (Or you could always just sign up for our free webinar next week with Jim Wagner and Eric S. Kastango.) 10:45 a.m. Wednesday: Make sure and attend Seek and IT Shall Find: Clinical Surveillance Systems. After an overview of the current state of these tools, Chris Hartman from UMass Memorial Medical Center will describe his department's use of our Sentri7 in meeting Core Measures and National Patient Safety Goals. Outside of pharmacy, The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), who are also having their national meeting this month, just endorsed the use of automated surveillance because, in their words, it will "change the infection prevention and control profession as we know it." When I'm not at these meetings, you'll find me at Pharmacy OneSource booth #817 in the ASHP exhibition hall where you can register to win a Kindle, Amazon's wireless reading device! If you'd like to Sentri7 see for yourself, get a demo at our booth! Or if you're not attending ASHP, you can get your own personal demo to see how clinical decision support can assist you in improving your clinical productivity. Now onto the news! Stay well-informed, Team Pharmacy OneSource Top Issue of the Week Drugstore giant Walgreen Co.'s chief executive, Greg Wasson, would like to have his army of "coaches" taking on a greater role for President Barack Obama should the White House and Congress come together to expand health-insurance coverage to the nation's uninsured.
