Good afternoon,

In the 2008 ASHP Pharmacy Staffing Survey the turnover rate for health-system pharmacist positions was 8.6% and 13.8% for pharmacy technicians. Larger hospitals reported less pharmacist turnover compared with smaller hospitals.

How much does your employee turnover cost?
The University of Wisconsin's Center for Community and Economic Development hosts an Online Employee Turnover Calculator you can use to find out.

The Pharmacy Manpower Project still shows moderate demand across most of the U.S., so pharmacists probably do not feel restricted to stay in their current job. Answer this week's poll: Are you considering a job change in the next year?

The good news is that employers can affect their pharmacist retention rate.

A 2007 study in JAPhA concluded: "While employers have little latitude for influencing demographic characteristics of employees, factors related to retention such as scheduling, opportunities for interpersonal interactions, salary/benefits, staffing, and workload are under an employer's control. These elements can be addressed by managers with the intent of reducing pharmacist turnover."

In our next free webinar co-sponsored by PharmacyWeek, Benefis Health System describes their multi-faceted approach to improving retention and recruitment. From 2000-2002, their turnover rate averaged 22% yearly. From 2003-2005 this decreased to an average of 4.7% yearly. For the last two consecutive years, their turnover rate has been 0%. How did they do it? Reserve your seat and find out October 29th!

Flexible schedules and rotating clinical shift cycles are one way to help with retention and spread out pharmacist workload. If you would like to implement advanced scheduling options, but don't have the time to manage it manually, take a look at ScheduleRx.

Now onto the news!

Stay well-informed,
