Good afternoon, United States Pharmacopoeia has put out a call for qualified candidates to apply to serve as a global base of scientific decision makers on the Council of Expert Committees. The 2010 - 2015 Council of Experts includes 20 Expert Committees in the areas of Nomenclature, Small Molecules, Biologics and Biotechnology, Excipients, General Chapters, Reference Standards, Compounding, Food Ingredients, and Dietary Supplements, with each member of the Council of Experts chairing an Expert Committee. USP is also seeking qualified candidates for its Expert Panels, which play an important advisory role to the Council of Experts. Pharmacy Purchasing & Products recently released their Cleanrooms & Compounding supplement for 2009. Eric S. Kastango, MBA, RPh, FASHP, an elected member of the current USP Sterile Compounding Committee (2005-2010), authored an article in the issue: "The Top 10 Gaps in USP Chapter Compliance." This article is a good written review of what he presented in our last free webinar with him. (You can find a copy in our webinar archive.) Eric will be presenting his next free webinar on November 18th on "USP 797: De-mystifying Beyond-Use Dating." (Disclaimer: He is speaking in his own capacity and not as a member of the Committee or as a USP representative.) Determining beyond-use dating (BUD) continues to vex pharmacists and technicians and is one of the most frequently asked questions of the chapter. Historically, BUDs were assigned solely on chemical stability data. USP Chapter 797 requires that both chemical stability and microbial stability be factored when assigned BUD to CSPs. In an effort to bring clarity to this critically important aspect of the USP chapter, Eric S. Kastango will review beyond-use dating and the requirements as they apply to USP 797. Register now! For more reference info on beyond-use dating, check out a recent article: "Assigning Beyond-Use Dates for Compounded Sterile Preparations: Evaluating Stability Data" from the September issue of Pharmacy Purchasing & Products. During one of our first conversations, Brent James told me a story that you wouldn’t necessarily expect to hear from a doctor. For most of human history, James explained, doctors have done more harm than good. Get the full story from the New York Times 5. Despite House approval, health care reform faces tough battle Narrow passage of a sweeping health care bill by the House of Representatives portends a continuing difficult fight for President Obama and fellow Democrats to get a bill through the Senate and into law. Get the full story from CNN 6. Discussion: Warfarin optimization "Does your institution have a standing protocol for warfarin? If so does your pharmacy take responsibility in managing warfarin therapy? Is your protocol for all warfarin patients or new warfarin patients only? How did you address understaffing while implementing a pharmacy driven protocol?" (read entire post/reply) 7.
