Clinical decision support system improves efficiency of pharmacist initiatives

Bellevue, Wash. -- Pharmacy OneSource, Inc., software as a service provider to more than 1,300 hospitals in the United States, announced today that The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ has adopted Sentri7 to take its clinical pharmacy programs to the next level.

With Sentri7, clinicians have a single point of access to lab results, medication records and patient demographics, data that currently reside in different systems. Clinicians can write rules against the data to identify opportunities for intervention and optimize medication use.

"All of our pharmacists share their professional day performing cognitive clinical pharmacist interventions, optimizing the care we deliver to our patients. In the last 12 months we have documented more than 107,000 interventions," said Ron Krych, Director of Pharmacy at The Valley Hospital. "We see Sentri7 as a clinical tool that will allow our pharmacists to spend less time looking for opportunities and more time optimizing the medication management process."

The hospital can use the Sentri7 software to optimize antimicrobial stewardship programs. Sentri7 can compare patients who are infected with a certain strain of bacteria to their currently-prescribed antibiotic to make sure they are getting the most effective treatment, and can flag patients who acquire a resistant strain like MRSA.

"Sentri7 is providing us with a clinical surveillance tool that our current hospital software could not," said Krych. "It is easy to use, provides real-time data and will allow us to make more changes to optimize more steps in the medication management process than ever before."

Sentri7 can also help the hospital comply with national standards and core measures set by the government and hospital accreditation bodies. For example, the program could flag patients that have had a heart attack and check to ensure they are taking aspirin, beta blockers or other preventative treatment required by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
