Halifax Regional Hospital - Real-time infection prevention surveillance saves time
by Pharmacy OneSource Published: 6/14/2012
Halifax Regional Hospital is part of Halifax Regional Health System. It is a 192-bed hospital in South Boston, Virginia. Millie Lavaway is the Manager of Infection Control and Employee Health and has been using the Sentri7 Infection Prevention Module since January 2012. In this interview, Lavaway says Sentri7's real-time surveillance has helped her staff understand what is going on in the entire hospital in terms of infection prevention.
Pharmacy OneSource: What successes have you seen so far with Sentri7?
Millie Lavaway: The system is very accurate as evidenced by several months of verification and the process for uploading data into NHSN is easy and consistent. By having my surveillance automated, I now have time to do what I should be doing: preventing infections and saving lives.
Pharmacy OneSource: How has Sentri7 helped your infection prevention workflow?
Millie Lavaway: Until recently, all of my surveillance work was done manually, a tedious and extremely time-consuming task, but the Sentri7 Infection Prevention Module has made my job much more efficient. It is a user-friendly module that monitors laboratory, micro, surgery, medication, and patient demographic information in real time. And although I am still learning this process, I will be able to write rules to identify whichever clinical situations I wish to monitor. From an infection preventionist point of view, I can see what is going on in the entire hospital at any given moment.
Pharmacy OneSource: Do you have other departments using the program?
Millie Lavaway: We use Sentri7 in Infection Control, Pharmacy and the Lab. The Lab is very excited about the Sentri7 Infection Control module since it provides them with a quick, accurate and up-to-the-moment antibiogram.
Pharmacy OneSource: What do you like best about Sentri7?
Millie Lavaway: There are many aspects of the module that I like, but if pressed, I would say three things: The "real time" in which I get results, which means I can stay current in the evenings, weekends, or even while I am on vacation; the fact that I can access Sentri7 away from work; and the support help I have received is phenomenal - I can call or shoot a quick e-mail and get a response very quickly.
Pharmacy OneSource: Any other comments you'd like to make about Sentri7 or Pharmacy OneSource?
Millie Lavaway: There are so many things I like about the module that it is hard to name just a few, but one of the functions I like is the ability to see if a patient has an elevated or rising WBC count, since this is one of the indicators of infection. I can check to see how many MDROs I have at any given time, where these patients are located and institute appropriate isolation, thereby preventing potential cross-contamination.
